From the Guide files of Friday, June 22, 1979: A DATE at the Palace awaited the Sonny Warner Show. Headed by Sonny and Pam Warner, of Prestwich, the variety show was invited to attend the Queen's Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace.
A MASTER picture framer returned from Italy with a silver medal for his craft. Mr Eric Young, of Kings Road, won the medal in the European Union of Master Picture Framers competition for his skill in framing a tapestry made by his wife, June.
MORE than 2,000 people crammed into St Mary's Park for the 1979 Prestwich Carnival. It was only the second time the Prestwich and Whitefield Round Table had organised the event but the verdict was that it was "better than ever".
A £791,000 scheme to build new council homes in the Heaton Park area was revealed. The plans were for 47 dwellings on two sites in Newtown Street and Bailey Street, including 20 two-bedroom flats, 18 one-bedroom flats and 9 two-bedroom houses. The site was already cleared following the demolition of terraced houses.
A GIFT day at St Andrew's Church, Hillock, raised £360 for church funds. Team clergy, Rev David Peters and Rev Basil Howard received gifts throughout the day and entertainment such as donkey rides and games, was provided for the children.
