A MOBILE phone antenna is to be sited in Whitefield despite a petition of more than 60 signatures being handed to the council.
Plans have been passed by Bury's planning committee to erect the 15 metre O2 monopole on land at George Street, near Whitefield fire station.
The column with three shrouded antennae and two equipment cabins, was opposed by residents not only as a visual atrocity but as a possible health risk.
Resident Steven Mellish addressed the committee on Tuesday night (July 27), and alleged there had been no consultation with any of the residents of George Street about the siting of the antenna. He also added that the footpath would be restricted, making it virtually impossible for wheelchair users to pass.
