AN investigation has been launched after a wagon driver crashed into trees at an Altham industrial estate.

The Biffa Waste Services Ltd employee had a lucky escape after narrowly missing a lamp-post at the junction between Altham Lane and Syke Side Drive.

He hit trees and bushes which smashed the front of the wagon. He was treated by paramedics at noon yesterday after suffering cuts and bruises to his head. He is thought to have lost consciousness at the wheel.

Police and Biffa manager Pat Turner were on scene until 2pm.

The front loading dustbin wagon was locked in forward drive at the time of impact, sinking itself deeper into the ground.

Barry Walton, spokesperson for Biffa, said: "We will be carrying out an investigation to determine what happened and speaking to the driver. The driver was taken to hospital but released early in the afternoon."
