CONGRATULATIONS to Bury Council for taking a courageous lead in protecting its workforce from second-hand smoke.
Every week new medical evidence spells out the dangers of inhaling other people's smoke. In a recent study presented to the Government, Professor Jamrozih of Imperial College estimated that exposure to second-hand smoke in the workplace causes around 700 premature deaths in the UK each year.
Bury Council is now leading the way nationally and its councillors should be complimented. All workers in the 21st century should have a right to smoke-free air. Well done Bury.
PAT KARNEY,
director of Smoke-Free
Greater Manchester (NHS).
