A BLACKBURN woman made intermittent claims for benefit despite working behind the bar at a working men's club.

Blackburn magistrates heard that Dawn Joanne King started working at the Mill Hill Club when she was just 16 and after she started claiming benefits was paid £1,892 she was not entitled to.

King, 21, of Dunoon Drive, pleaded guilty to two charges of failing to notify a change of circumstances and two of making false representation to receive benefit and asked for 40 offences to be taken into consideration.

She was fined £150 and ordered to pay £50 costs.

Robin Phoenix, prosecuting, said King had been claiming benefits intermittently from March 2001 on the basis that she was unemployed.

"She was in fact working at Mill Hill Working Men's Club from July 1999 until August 2003 earning between £12 and £104 a week," said Mr Phoenix.

"No benefits would have been payable in 18 weeks and a reduced rate in another 63 weeks."

Louise Voce, defending, said the work had been casual and did not involve many hours or much money. She was very young when she started but now she is older and knows better," added Miss Voce.
