Ennismore Youth Club has invested in the gear, which includes footballs, cricket bats, sports vests and netball equipment, thanks to a grant from Burnley police secured through the Rank Charitable Trust.

It is hoped the equipment will help to attract more youths to the club, deterring them from other activities which may cause problems for residents in the Queensgate area of Burnley.

The new equipment went on display yesterday at a special fun day held by the club at the recreation ground at Basnett Street.

As well as showing off the new sporting equipment, police also took along their CCTV van to show people the technology they have at their disposal.

Nigel Keates, police community support officer for Queensgate said: "It's important that local young people have somewhere to go to have fun in a safe environment.

"Youth clubs like this one provide that facility which is why ourselves and the Rank Foundation were delighted to be able to assist with a cash injection."

Queensgate ward councillor Mohammad Najib said: "Juvenile nuisance was certainly a problem in the area.

"Hopefully this initiative will help put a stop to youngsters gathering on the streets and causing problems."
