WORK on the £1.5million restoration of a Nelson park starts today with the creation of a new children's play area.
Marsden Park will be returned to its former glory by 2008 thanks to money from the National Heritage Lottery Fund, Pendle Council and other sources.
Kevin Singleton, Project Manager, said: "It's very exciting to see the work finally getting under way after years of preparation and funding bids. The new inclusive play area is very special as it allows access for disabled children. The design was developed after consultation with local school children, so hopefully they will feel a sense of ownership."
The new play area is expected to be completed this September. In total 13 projects will be carried out in Marsden Park over the next four years to return the park to its former glory.
The renovation of Marsden Old Hall, dating from 1650, will be at the centre of the restoration and will provide community and education rooms, including internet access, meeting rooms and toilet facilities.
Other projects include moving the sensory garden, putting up signs in Braille, restoring the original lay-out of the park and developing a marsh area to encourage wildlife into the park.
Coun Mahboob Ahmed, cabinet member for community, arts and leisure, said: "This is a major investment into facilities for the Pendle community to enjoy and will ensure Marsden Park's architectural features will be enjoyed for many more generations to come."
More information about the restoration is available at the Marsden Park marquee at the Great Outdoors Day in the park, on Saturday, August 7, from 11am to 4pm.
There will also be face painting, henna painting, owl and hawk displays, a climbing wall and charity stalls. There will also be fairground rides, a bouncy castle and a circus skills workshop.
