KEEP YOUR HEADS: Steve Cotterill's warning
STEVE Cotterill has warned that discipline is the key to keeping Burnley's small squad at his disposal this season.
The Clarets became embroiled in a niggly affair with Munich 1860 as their pre-season tour of Austria ended with a second 1-1 draw.
Defender Mo Camara had to be substituted as tempers flared in the wake of some tiresome diving by the German Bundesliga Two outfit.
And new boss Cotterill believes his players will have learned a valuable lesson with the new First Division season kicking off in earnest this weekend.
Cotterill said: "The big thing for us is that our discipline needs to be bang on and unfortunately I don't think we passed that test against Munich.
"It is very different for our boys and very awkward. You see some of the antics of foreign players and we don't come up against that, so we react.
"You get anxious, uptight and angry and then you don't pass the ball as you would like.
"You remember the last tackle and lose your way and it all becomes very irritating - but it's great for discipline.
"I wouldn't want to play against it every week, but certainly for keeping your calm it was a great test for the boys."
Frank Sinclair opened his Burnley account with a smartly taken goal after suffering a cut eye early in the game that required two stitches.
But 1860 fought back and grabbed an honourable draw with a late headed equaliser.
Cotterill added: "We didn't start the game too brightly but we lost Frank for a while and then we lost Graham Branch with a stiff back, so we never really got going in the first half.
"We were better in the second half, but I don't think it would have taken much."
Another bonus was a welcome 75-minute run-out for Ian Moore, who had previously had just one hour's worth of pre-season action as he battled back from ankle ligament damage.
Cotterill admitted: "We ended up playing Ian longer than I wanted, but all credit to him. He had some good touches, won a few headers and ran down the channels like he normally does.
"It's terrific to have him back."
