IT was a fantastic homecoming for Welsh boss Mark Hughes who more than enjoyed clinching the Worthington Cup on his home turf.

The veteran striker moved into midfield in the absence of the suspended Garry Flitcroft and Tugay and proved an absolute revelation as Rovers secured a nailbiting 2-1 victory.

"It was special for the rest of the players and for me, with my maturity," joked the 38-year-old

"I was asked to do a certain job today and I think I did okay.

"I am pleased for everybody as Blackburn haven't been to a major final for so many years, we wanted to enjoy it and give a good account for ourselves.

"It is special. I have been involved at clubs before who haven't won major trophies for years and then they win it so I am pleased for everybody associated with the club, staff and fans alike."

Hughes got a rare 90 minutes under his belt and he did so well that manager Graeme Souness now says he has a selection dilemma on his hands ahead of Saturday's huge relegation battle with Bolton at the Reebok.

"I haven't played 90 minutes for a while so there was a worry about whether or not I could last but I felt okay with it," said Hughes.

"When you are my age you also need some young legs in the side and that is what we have got and they helped me out.

"You always start the season wanting to be involved in things like cup finals and I am no different. Sometimes it is not possible to realise your ambitions, other times it is. I am just pleased to have been involved here."
