GREENMOUNT'S hopes of a second successive Hamer Cup win were blown away by Westhoughton's West Indian pro Antonio Mayers.

Chasing 170, Westhoughton were on the ropes at 32-2 and they went on to lose another three cheap wickets before Mayers entered the fray.

The pro, who had suffered a groin problem 24 hours earlier against Egerton and had to use a runner when batting, finally managed to steady the innings.

Partnerships with Alan Gaskell at the start of his innings, and then Mark Atherton towards the end, finally turned the match Westhoughton's way.

Mayers steered his side home, his unbeaten innings of 85 earning him the man of the match award.

Westhoughton's decision to put Greenmount in to bat looked as if it had backfired when the Bury side raced to 106-2.

Openers Andy Bowker and Gary Chadwick put on a 54-run opening partnership and then pro Nishit Shetty came in to hit 40 off 38 deliveries.

Yet when Paul Hart finally took the wicket of the pro, it proved to be the turning point of the game.

Greenmount collapsed to 132-8, and then 148-9, and it was only a spirited partnership between brothers Neil and Martin Kay that helped give the total some respectability at 170.
