A HYNDBURN transport service which for years has enabled elderly and disabled people to get out and about is celebrating its 20th birthday.
Dial-a-Ride Hyndburn has provided essential bus services to those who cannot use. It is estimated to have made a quarter of a million single passenger journeys in the last two decades.
Founded in 1984 by the late Eric Humphrey, the scheme initially ran a one-bus service. But 20 years on, and with four remaining original members, the service has evolved and now runs three services carrying at least 50 passengers a day.
With support from Lancashire County Council and Hyndburn Borough Council, volunteers provide bus services that run to semi-scheduled routes and on-demand requests.
Dial-a-Ride also operates a group transport service for disabled groups, residential and nursing homes and operates during evenings and weekends when normal services are not in use.
One of the favourite trips is to the Blackpool Illuminations followed by fish and chips.
