A NUMBER of local pool players from the Bury League recently competed in the EUKPF/BAPTO World Championships held at Bridlington Spa.
The local lads played for the Isle Of Man team and did superbly throughout the competition which attracted 1,400 competitors from many countries.
Among the teams conquered were national teams from France, India and England.
The squad was managed by Don Mills from the Rose and Crown Ramsbottom in his usual fair and supportive manner and captained by Phil Hughes (Swan) who brought the best out of his players.
Paul Howcroft (Swan) and Martin Mills (Rose & Crown) played exceptionally well and got through several rounds of the competition for the world's best invidual.
Moreover, Martin hardly lost a game during the first three days.
Steve Slyman (Hamers Arms) played superbly on his first appearance at this level while Carl Dykes and Mark Arnold (Masons Arms) demonstrated their skill and experience and Bridge Tavern's Billy Fenton was back to his accomplished best.
Andy Smith (Rose & Crown) had a good tournament while newcomers Stuart Horne and James Grey proved no pushovers either.
The rest of the squad was made up of regular experienced BAPTO rules players and team spirit shone through throughout.
The event, generally, was an outstanding success and proved that Bury players can compete with the best in the world.
