ON SAFARI: Jason Snape was picked Adventure in Africa
AN air cadet has beat off tough competition to land a place on a trip of a lifetime to Africa.
Cadet Sergeant Jason Snape, 16, of Burnley, will travel on a Joint Services Cadet Forces Expedition to East Africa, representing No.352 (Burnley) Squadron, East Lancashire Wing, and the Air training Corps.
He beat off a number of hopefuls from across the UK in a selection weekend held at the Frimley Park Cadet Training Centre near Cambridge.
Now next year, Jason, of Printers Fold, will climb Mount Kilimanjaro, undertake a safari, and work on a development project to help the local community.
Jason said his parents were a bit apprehensive of the trip but were delighted.
"I'm over the moon to have been selected. It will be hard work, but I'm looking forward to it and, although it will be a challenge, I'm sure I can do it.
"It's going to be a once in a lifetime opportunity and experience."
During the selection weekend held last month Jason had to undergo a series of tasks, including a one-mile log run, an assault course, a map-reading exercise, survival exercise and formal interview.
Now he will join other cadets on the expedition, which is a joint venture with the Army Cadet Force and Sea Cadet Corps.
Before setting off, Jason will attend a team building weekend and a week-long mountain training course.
He will also have to raise £1,500 to fund the expedition and plans to raise money by doing a sponsored bike ride.
Anyone who wishes to make a donation should contact the squadron on 01282 423360.
