LEIGH Harriers were crowned division four champions after an outstanding season and now step up into division three.

The senior men and women's teams finished the series of league matches with a fantastic victory at Warrington thanks to some fine performances by the field eventers.

David Smith just missed the club record in the javelin throwing a pb of 52.64m to win the A event while Simon Jones took the B group javelin and shot. The A shot went to Mark Pendlebury who also won the B high jump, the A event going to Kevin Wright.

John Taylor and Ian Graham doubled in the A and B pole vault.

On the track the 800m A and B race winners were Alex Urmston (2min 3.4) and John Howarth (2min 6.1).

Tom Boardman was a convincing winner in the 1500m with Tom Henders finishing 2nd in the B event.

Darren Smith was runner-up in the 100 and 200m sprints and the 400m hurdles, while Sean Spillane took the B hurdles and finished second in the 400m.

John Indricks was the 400m A race victor while Duncan McCarrick took the 110m hurdles.

In the ladies' match Carla Gregory had a second and third in the shot and hammer, while Louise Boardman was runner-up in the 100m and 200m sprints and Amanda Fearnley was second in the 1500m and third in the 400m.

Other results were: Emma Morris 1 1500m B, 2 400m B; Rebecca Howarth 2 800m, Sarah Cain 3 3000m, Eileen Castledine 2 3000m B, Rebecca Howarth 1 200m, Emma Morris 2 javelin.

The Leigh team have a chance to win more silverware at Barnsley in two weeks when the athletes compete in the KO final for the lower leagues' Plate Trophy.
