A HUGE clean-up operation was completed today after a five-mile long diesel spill caused six vehicles to career off a road.

The spill covered a stretch of Grane Road between Haslingden and Blackburn causing three separate accidents yesterday.

John Whitelock, 31, of Bury, was travelling from Haslingden to Blackburn near to the Cloughhead Picnic site when his black Ford Focus left the road.

He was taken to Blackburn Royal Infirmary with chest injuries and whip lash.

In another incident, three vehicles came off the road near the Gray Mare pub - with one - a silver Ford Ka - landing on its roof in a field.

The male driver suffered minor injuries and was able to free himself.

In a separate incident two cars skidded and collided. None of the occupants were seriously injured.

PC Phil Pilkington of Colne's Road Policing Unit said: "Parts of the road had to be closed while the vehicles were removed and a clean-up operation was completed.

"Hyndburn Council and Blackburn Council were at the scene to grit the road before scrubbing it clean to make it safe again for motorists."
