LEIGH Athletic's season started well with a 2-1 home win over newly promoted Old Alts.

After a scrappy opening Leigh gained the upper hand and had several chances to take the lead but it was the visitors who struck first following a good move.

In a double blow Leigh skipper Keiron Halliwell was then forced off through injury. Despite this, Leigh galvanised themselves and soon equalised through Danny Wilson following Phil Sheehan's flick.

The second half started in much the same way and it was no surprise when man of the match Steve Bevan fired home following more good work from Sheehan. Despite dominating the game Leigh could not find the third goal, Gordon Spowart going closest. Leigh now face last season's champions Royton visit Madeley Park on Saturday, k.o 2.30pm.

The reserves went down to a 2-1 defeat at Wythenshawe Ams, Steve Dando on target. The third team beat Pennington 3-2 with Tony Lewis grabbing a brace and also missing a penalty.
