SEDGLEY PARK...19

SEDGLEY travelled to Castle Park with a squad of 28 for this friendly and played four 20-minute periods, with each side fielding possibly their strongest side in the first two.

The Tigers started strongly and the handling and subsequent rucking looked impressive.

Doncaster then began to severely test the Tigers' defence which held solid for 10 minutes, until Wakley dummied through to send Boden in for a try, which Liley converted.

In the second period Park again started strongly but over-complicated and twice lost good possession.

New signing Jon Feeley, however, showed his pace when he picked up a loose ball on his own 20 metre line to race away for a try which de Jager converted.

The defences were again strong on each side, but the over officious referee sin-binned Doncaster's Muller and Park's Ponton for slowing the game down. Senior had already been sin binned for killing the ball.

The home side took advantage of the confusion for Liley to squeeze through for a try which he converted.

In the second half both clubs made considerable changes and Blair Feeney took to the field for the first time in Sedgley colours.

Doncaster immediately went on the attack and put Briggs clear, but a last-ditch tackle from Pete Roberts saved the day.

From the line out Sedgley moved the ball quickly and Glynn made good ground before kicking ahead and winning a line out near the home line.

Park won this and drove for the line for Ponton to touch down for a try which de Jager converted to make it 14 -14.

From this point Doncaster's strength in depth quickly became apparent and the visitors were overwhelmed by tries from Van Vusen (2) Lloyd (2) and Boden, before Welding pounced on a loose ball to score for Park.

For the trip to Grove Park to take on Manchester, four more players are likley to be added to the squad - Dave McCormack, Carlos Hassan, John Skurr and Jimmy Naylor.

With the uncertainty surrounding the future of Rotherham Titans - they are in liquidation and have until 5pm today to find a buyer or go out of business - the game against Manchester could be an important one.

For, despite being relegated at the end of last season after finishing bottom, they may be given a reprieve and be invited to retake their place in National One. As the other club relegated - Wakefield - have since gone out of business.

The other alternative would be for the division to continue with 13 clubs, which would probably result in one and not two clubs being relegated.

Sedgley's try scorers against Doncaster were new signings (L-R) James Ponton, Jon Feeley and Richard Welding.
