ANGRY residents are protesting against plans for a telecommunications mast to be sited close to their homes.

Plans have been put forward by mobile phone giant, Vodafone, for a 12-metre mast to be built on a grass verge next to Glendale Avenue, off Manchester Road.

Residents oppose the mast, with three shrouded antennas and two equipment cabins, fearing it would be a visual monstrosity and could affect the health of the community.

More than 200 campaigners have signed a petition against the mast and enlisted the support of Unsworth ward councillor, Gordon Sharkey.

Resident Roy Smith said: "There is an overall question mark still hanging over the health issues and Bury Council should be aware that the proposed area is a popular play area for young children."

The protesters also claim the location of the mast would have serious financial implications, with estate agents estimating that homes near the mast could lose up to 20 per cent of their value.

Coun Sharkey said: "There are too many masts in our area. They are a problem and a danger to our children's health so I am going to help the resident's campaign."

The decision over the mast will be made next Thursday. Glendale Avenue resident, Mr Abbas Geramipour, said: "The outcome of this will determine whether the local authorities are working for the local people or the big companies. We think it is only fair that the people who are affected should have a say in the matter."
