AN ANTI-truancy campaign will be taking place at supermarkets across East Lancashire warning youngsters of the dangers of skipping school.

Lancashire County Council is working with Kwik Save to remind young people of the importance of education, and the potential dangers of playing truant.

Eye-catching posters with the no-nonsense message 'Bunking Off - Missing Out' will go up at 15 supermarkets, including Accrington, Rawtenstall, Bacup, Burnley, Nelson, and Colne.

Campaigns using the same posters on billboards and bus shelters across Lancashire have proved a big success over the last few years.

The posters, to be put up on community information notice boards, will be displayed from the end of this month for two years.

As well as the posters, leaflets about the importance of school attendance will be given out to parents at the same supermarkets.

Mike Sunderland, from Lancashire County Council's education welfare team, said: "We want to send out a clear message to both parents and young people.

"Missing out on an education can limit options for the future, and if young people are not in school then they are also increasingly vulnerable to becoming involved in crime, or becoming the victim of crime themselves.

"Everyone in the community visits a supermarket, and this is a great way to attract attention to a vitally important subject."
