MR ADAM'S letter (August 13) suggests that we must choose between efficiency or the support of weaker, needier members of society. Is he suggesting the old must accept that their necessary visits to a post office must entail inconveniently long journeys and waiting times, which in winter can be uncomfortable and sometimes painful, in the interests of his "efficiency"?
A public service should embrace care for those who need it, and efficiency. The Post Office should provide more efficient security to sub-offices and pressure the Government to provide, (not just empty promises to provide), an increased, active local police presence.
Mr Adam's fear of England becoming a European irrelevance is already realised in many ways. As far back as 1995 the Regionalisation of Europe Map in Brussels showed Scotland, Wales and Ireland, but no England. Our place on the map was merely shown as a group of European Regions.
