A FYLDE motocross bike rider was in a serious condition in hospital yesterday (Wednesday) after being saved from swelling tides by a microlight pilot.

Mark Bradley, 22, of Pilling, was knocked unconscious after falling off his motocross bike at Pilling Sands on Sunday, August 15.

The pilot spotted the casualty as he passed the accident spot close to Fluke Hall.

He contacted the emergency services - who alerted the North West Air Ambulance - after landing his ultra light aircraft just 20 yards from the rapidly rising tides.

The patient was taken by members of the air ambulance by road to the Royal Lancaster Infirmary where he was treated for suspected spinal injuries.

His condition was later described as stable and comfortable.

North West Air Ambulance spokesman, Paul Crone, said: "Had this man not been spotted by the microlight pilot, it might have been a very different story.

"He saw the man had crashed, landed on the beach and called the emergency services.

'When we landed on the beach, the tide was starting to come in pretty quickly and we didn't hang around in immobilising the patient and getting him off the beach and to hospital."
