A FYLDE businesswoman has raised more than £18,000 to pay for a state-of-the-art bladder scanner for Christie's in memory of her late husband.

Shirley Woods, of Higher Walton, Preston, raised the cash with the help of family and friends after watching husband, Michael, died of bladder cancer at the Manchester hospital early last year.

The mum-of-two - who also owns Woods Waste Skip Hire, Lytham - set about organising fund-raisers such as a celebrity gala and a haunted house sleepover in a bid to secure the badly-needed equipment for the world-renowned specialist cancer hospital.

Christie's bosses have now named the scanner in Michael's memory as a fitting tribute to the Woods family.

Shirley, who attended the unveiling with son George, 8, and daughter Grace, 2, said: "The team at Christie's did their very best for Michael, but his cancer was too aggressive.

"Michael was so brave and caring, we knew he would want us to do something to help other patients in the future, so we started fund-raising.

"Now, eighteen months later, we are delighted to have enough money to be able to purchase equipment that will benefit patients for many years to come."

Hospital Appeals Director Toni Leden (pictured left) said: "We're very grateful to Shirley and her friends and family for everything they have done. This is a marvellous piece of equipment that will help staff treat patients more effectively and we are delighted it has been named the Michael Woods Scanner in his memory."
