CHILDREN'S charity UNICEF is appealing for people to take part in a fundraising day that could save thousands of lives.

The north west branch of the charity, which is based in Prestwich, is to launch a Children of Sudan Day on Friday, August 27.

Thousands of children in the Darfur region of Sudan are caught up in the violent conflict and will face hunger and disease if vital aid does not reach them soon.

Millions of pounds are needed to provide clean water, therapeutic feeding, basic sanitation and urgent healthcare.

Medicines and vaccinations are particularly crucial to prevent the spread of disease and epidemics such as measles, which is claiming the lives of two children every hour in Sudan.

Andrea Lock, regional fundraising manager for UNICEF UK North West branch, said: "We have an emergency on our hands and our actions over the next few weeks will determine the physical and mental well-being of an entire generation."
