FYLDE A-Level students are celebrating after notching up a series of record passes.

In line with national reports that the number of 'A' grade students are on the increase - eleven students at King Edward VII and Queen Mary School, Lytham, scooped three straight A's.

The school's Oxbridge candidates - Jonathan Batty, Stuart Hookham, Chris Tongue and Paul Tognarelli - were also celebrating after their places at Oxford and Cambridge were confirmed by the high-ranking universities.

School Principal, Robert Karling said: "We are favourably impressed with this year's results.

"But the key thing for us is that the majority of our students have acheived their potential and got the grades that they wanted.

"We're also pleased to see that the universities are being very sensible about candidates whose grades fall just below what they need for admission."

Blackpool Sixth Form college is also waving goodbye to Oxbridge candidates - Sarah Farrell and Louise Rigby - both of whom confirmed their places at Oxford and Cambridge after earning five 'A' grade passes.

College principal, Felicity Greeves said: "We've had some very happy students with us this morning.

"It's been a very different results day for the college because we've had so many more students with us this year.

"But we're pleased to say that there has been a two per cent increase in our A to B grades, with 18 of our students achieving a full five 'A' grade passes.

"We're also very proud of our two Oxbridge students and we wish both Sarah and Louise the very best of luck at Oxford and Cambridge this autumn."

At Blackpool and the Fylde College more than 90 per cent of candidates earned passes at A to C grades for the second year running.

A college spokeswoman said: "This year's results are excellent, even better than we expected.

"Happily we've also managed to hang on to our record pass mark acheivement from last year's results which is a bonus for students sitting their exams next year."

Pass rates were also improved at Lytham St Annes High School, Lytham, which saw an improvement on last year's record breaking results.

A school spokesman said: "We are absolutely delighted with this year's A-Level achievements.

"The vast majority of our students have got what they needed to move on to higher education and many have even surpassed their expected grades.

"There was definitely a feeling of achievement in our results hall this morning."

Staff and students at Fleetwood High School were also celebrating after every student was offered a place at the university of their choice.

School spokeswoman, Emma Copeland said: "Everybody was very happy with the results.

"We're waiting for the official analysis of results to be put together but this year's grades look to be a positive addition to the school's record."

Meanwhile at Baines Sixth Form Centre, Poulton, they were yet more reports of contented candidates.

A Baines spokeswoman said: "Both staff and students were very pleased with the repeated success of our candidates this year."

Lancashire County Council's Cabinet Member for Education, Cllr Alan Whittaker said: "These are a tremendous set of results and reveal the hard work of the young people and their teachers in Lancashire.

"We should be celebrating their success instead of talking about whether A-levels are becoming easier.

"The young people who have done so well today are champions for the county."
