HYNDBURN'S only town crier dusted off his traditional tricorn hat for the most important ceremony of the year.
Peter Cornwell, 49, had Great Harwood standing to attention as he carried out his third official duty of 2004.
The father-of-three opened the annual Great Harwood Fair in Town Square in an ancient ceremony that gives permission for traders to set up in the street.
Residents and dignitaries turned out at 9am on Saturday to hear the Peter's yelling and bell-ringing.
The first town crier in Great Harwood stretched his vocal chords in 1318 - and the speech has remained almost unchanged ever since.
Peter, who works as a process manager at LG Philips, in Simonstone, and lives in Harwood Lane, Great Harwood, said he relishes the chance to stand in front of crowds, despite the strange clothing.
"Everything seemed to go really well and everyone enjoyed it," he said. "It adds that little bit extra, I think.
"I was still a little bit nervous but who wouldn't be!"
