RMI chairman Bill Taylor has sent a 'support us or we die' plea to the people of Leigh after support for the club reached rock bottom at the weekend.

Woking confirmed that just three people paid to enter the end for away supporters at Kingfield Stadium on Saturday and just ONE of those was a Leigh RMI fan.

This comes just a week after fewer than 250 people from the town paid to watch Phil Starbuck's men open their Conference campaign with a late defeat to Crawley Town at Hilton Park.

"We need 700 people through the turnstiles at home games just to break even", said Taylor, whose side faces a tricky Trans-Pennine tie against Halifax Town at Leigh on Saturday.

"We are doing our best to provide a team for the town who play good football on low wages - if we can get a cup run and a few more bodies on the terraces then we can then start to move forward on the pitch and try to improve.

"But at the moment, the circumstances are difficult. We are a club with a great future especially with the new stadium on the horizon.

"We just want people to give us a chance and we can put pride back into the town with a football club that won't be too far away from the Football League if we get the right backing."

Leigh's crowds have dipped alarmingly in recent seasons and despite averaging over 600 in their first season of Conference football in 2000/01, they now struggle to achieve two-thirds of that number.
