TRAVELLERS who settled on land in Radcliffe have been told to move on or face court.

Direction notices were served on 12 owners of the caravans and vehicles last Thursday by Bury Council.

The notices ordered them to leave the land at Celtic House, on Sailor Brow, Radcliffe New Road, within 24 hours.

But the travellers ignored the notices, and they were then served with summonses on Tuesday .

A hearing has been listed at Bury Magistrates court for Thursday morning, where a removal order will be applied for.

A further 12 caravans arrived at the site on Sunday, which is under the management of Bury Council's parks and countryside department, and they have now been served with direction notices.

A spokesman for Bury Council's environment and development services, said: "If the removal order is granted then the travellers have to vacate the specified land, and hopefully, this will be done voluntarily. However, there will be provisions in place for an enforced eviction if this becomes necessary."

Inspector David Jones, of Bury Police, said: "If the group decide to stay, they will receive a summons from the court that will order them off the land. If they still refuse to leave, they can be then be forced off."
