ACCRINGTON restaurateur Chris Dobson put up a poster banning film director Michael Winner from dining at his restaurant, Callum's, after being upset at his vitriolic column in the Sunday Times. A campaign saw the wanted posters being put up in restaurants across the country with many offering a free bottle of champagne to diners who alerted staff to Mr Winner's presence.

YOUNG musicians from the Lancashire Schools Symphony gave an impromptu sing-song in the lounge of a North Sea car ferry while helicopters raced to save passengers after the ship ran aground in Gothenburg. Nobody was hurt in the accident, caused by high winds driving the ship on to rocks.

BLACKBURN Rotary Club enjoyed a guest lecture about the story of tea by the aptly-named Mr E Grey. Mr Grey told his audience how half of all tea produced (43,000,000lbs according to his calculations) had been drunk in Britain.
