COLNE were made to pay for a host of missed chances.
John Borland, Steve Cunningham and Carl Haworth all had good opportunities to break the deadlock in the first half, while goalkeeper Ross Baxter, back from injury, did not have a save to make.
The Reds started the second half strongly, with Ian Simpson, Borland and Haworth going close. But a mistake by Borland in the middle of the park led to St Helens Town breaking and taking the lead.
Close had a goal disallowed 10 minutes later for an off-the-ball defence.
