MP JANET Anderson has welcomed the announcement by Lancashire police that they are to crack down on drivers who use handheld mobile phones.

Police launched an operation after revealing that more than 800 motorists had been caught since new laws came into force last December.

The Rossendale and Darwen Labour backbencher said: "Almost every day, as I drive around my constituency, I see drivers flagrantly flouting this legislation.

"This is not only highly dangerous to pedestrians and other road users, it is entirely unnecessary. I cannot believe that anyone needs to use their mobile phone when driving.

"I now make a point of switching off my mobile while driving and I do not understand why others cannot do the same."
