BIRTHDAY boys and girls from all over the area have celebrated their special day at Leigh Superbowl - but it's the Superbowl's own turn to celebrate as the tenpin bowling alley reaches its first birthday.

The Windermere Road venue, which has forged strong community links over the past 12 months, marked its successful first year with a party and a birthday cake that is being donated to Wigan and Leigh Hospice.

Superbowl sales and marketing manager Jo Davies is looking forward to another successful year.

She said: "It's been a great year. One of our strengths is our community focus, and we have worked hard to ensure we are more than simply a bowling alley, particularly working with local schools and young people."

This community role has included taking part in the recent Leigh Carnival. Schools have been invited to reward children with a 100% attendance record with a free game of bowling and the Superbowl has supported the 'Greener Cleaner Leigh' campaign by providing prizes for a children's colouring competition.

She continued: "We take having fun very seriously! We've got lots of plans that we hope will make our second year even better than the first. These include a Western theme night at the end of the month complete with Bucking Bronco, and a 'Bowlathon' fundraiser for Atherton Swimming Club."

The Bowlathon on September 22, will feature a sponsored bowling session to raise much-needed cash for the 100 year old club.
