COMMUNITY spirit was alive and kicking in Whitefield as hundreds of residents turned out for a family fun day on Sunday (Aug 22).

A carnival atmosphere reached parkland in Thatch Leach Lane for an event organised by the local Homewatch scheme.

Supported by Whitefield and Unsworth area board, the fun day featured stalls and games, face-painting, a bouncy castle and puppet shows.

There were also plenty of sporting activities, with demonstrations from the Sedgley Park Rugby Club Under-16s team. The Mayor of Bury, Coun Barry Briggs, was also in attendance.

Homewatch co-ordinator Sean Parkhill said: "It was brilliant. About 300 people turned up and the weather was good. The aim of the Homewatch is to get the community to work together in reporting crime to the police, and we managed to recruit some more members on the day."

Mr Parkhill said the event was such a success the Thatch Leach Lane Homewatch scheme was planning a bigger event for next year.
