A SIZZLING selection of entries resulted in a successful summer show for Whitefield Horticultural Society.

The event, which was the 90th annual show, attracted 251 entries of vegetables, flowers and plants, cookery, handicrafts and children's classes.

There were also special categories for Whitefield allotment holders and flower arranging.

Organisers were particularly pleased to see a variety of entries in the children's classes and trophies for all sections were presented by the former chairman, Mr Geoff Preston.

Although hailed a success, the show held at Whitefield Methodist Church, in Elms Street, was tinged with sadness following the death of society secretary John Middleton, whose funeral was held the previous day.

Visitors and society members made donations throughout the day in Mr Middleton's memory and the money will be presented to Bury Hospice, where he died.

The society's autumn show will be held at the same venue on Saturday, September 11.
