THE funeral of a former Prestwich youngster, killed in a horrific road accident in February, will take place next Thursday.

Simon Ashman (20) died, along with 15-year-old friend Chantelle Petterson, from Helmshore, when the van in which they were travelling hit a wall outside Haslingden Sports Centre in Helmshore Road, on the evening of February 1.

The pair were flung from the white Metro and two other men in the van suffered serious injuries but survived. No other vehicles were involved in the accident.

On Thursday, September 2, family and friends of Simon will gather at Emmanuel Holcombe Parish Church at 11am, to say farewell to the apprentice builder and passionate Liverpool FC supporter.

Following the funeral service he will be buried in his Liverpool top, signed by Michael Owen, at Ramsbottom Cemetery.

His body has finally been released to his family after an in-depth criminal investigation by police into the accident which has resulted in the driver of the van being charged with numerous offences.

Simon is a former pupil of Castlebrook High School, Unsworth, and had lived with his mother Lynne in Riverview Close, Prestwich. He previously lived with his parents in Fernview Drive, Holcombe Brook, before they divorced. He was back residing in Helmshore with his dad at the time of his death.

Simon has an older brother and sister, Neil and Amy. His pet dog, Wicked, was also injured in February's tragedy.

Paying tribute to his son, Mr Neil Ashman said: "Simon was a happy-go-lucky young man who was a devout Liverpool supporter and loved his music. He was loved by everyone and we still miss him."

"Anyone who knew Simon from his school days in Prestwich and from living in Holcombe Brook, is welcome to attend the funeral," said Mr Ashman.

A 22-year-old man from Haslingden is to appear before Burnley Crown Court on Tuesday (Aug 31) to face charges in connection with the fatal crash. They include causing death by dangerous driving, driving under the influence of alcohol and driving with no insurance.
