I WHOLEHEARTEDLY agree that the police should be doing more to crack down on people using mobile phones whilst driving.

On Saturday, I was driving on the M65 and wondered why the car in front of me was not overtaking the vehicle in front of him.

He was doing about 60mph and braking on and off.

I pulled out to overtake him and there he was phone to his ear and holding the steering wheel with one hand. He was about 30 yards off the car in front of him.

I have seen a number of articulated lorries being driven round corners with the driver only using one hand whilst they have been taking on the phone.

I think that penalty points would be a deterrent. If they give them to people caught speeding it should also apply to people using mobiles as it is very dangerous.

Whilst on the subject of clampdowns, the police should also be doing something about people driving with fog lights on.

This is becoming very common even on summer nights when it is just going dark. During the summer months the number of people doing this has become even more apparent even during daylight hours.

It is very dangerous and I thought it was against the law to drive with fog lights on unless there is poor visibility. The lights dazzle oncoming drivers and could cause an accident.

It is time that the road safety group from Lancashire County Council did something about these things instead of concentrating on speed all the time.
