CAROLINE Cumberlidge (LET letters, August 23), like many of us, has had problems finding reliable tradespeople and also talks about her elderly parents facing the same problem.

Blackburn with Darwen social services department has recognised the problem that older people have getting reliable and affordable tradespeople to carry out minor repair work around the house.

That is why, working with the Age Concern and a range of private and voluntary sector businesses, the council have set up a Care Network. It is for older people, people with disabilities and carers who need services such as home maintenance, shopping, cleaning, laundry and gardening.

The scheme does not just put people in touch with tradespeople, but makes sure that the services they provide are affordable and of good quality.

Anyone can call the Care Network helpline on 01254 266680. Helpdesk staff will even come to your house if you need some extra help to arrange services. The helpdesk doesn't charge for time, but you do pay for any services.

The scheme also identifies gaps in services and works with organisations to develop new services to meet those needs. If there are any people who wish to start up community ventures or small businesses to meet this need, we would be pleased to hear from them.

There are reliable tradespeople out there and this service hopes to make it easier for people to find them.
