PARENTS were warned not to let their children turn into slaves to television at the opening of the new Burnley Girls' High School. Vice-Chancellor of Liverpool University Sir James Mountford said TV, radio and cinema were a serious menace to people of school age, who should be devoting their time to study if they were to justify a place at the new school.

A 73-YEAR-OLD Chipping man was fined £25 by Clitheroe magistrates after pleading guilty to failing to stop at a zebra crossing in Longridge. The unnamed man did not attend court but sent his guilty plea by letter.

THE price of strawberry and raspberry jam was set to rocket after growers reported a shortage of the fruit. Bad weather across Europe was blamed for the price hike, which was set to rise 70 per cent more than normal.
