THE wraps are coming off a spectacular new gateway to Blackpool - just in time for the Bank Holiday weekend.

The new £4m southern gateway, the first completed stage of the Blackpool Masterplan, will be officially opened tomorrow (Friday, August 27) by Blackpool's mayor, Cllr Maxine Callow.

'Dramatic lighting,' new sculptures and a sparkling light wall in the shape of a wave are amongst the promised innovations in the area opposite the Pleasure Beach on South Promenade. Blackpool Council leader, Cllr Roy Fisher, said: "First impressions count and this project has created an impressive new gateway to the resort.

"It sets the tone for the quality of development that we intend to achieve under the Masterplan, and shows how we are creating a new image in Blackpool to set off existing attractions. The new-look Promenade features dramatic and imaginative lighting that will complement Blackpool's famous Illuminations.

"The project has also involved creating new public spaces, for the benefit of locals and tourists alike."

Funding for the scheme came from the North West Regional Development Agency (NWDA) and the European Regional Development Fund.

NWDA area manager for Lancashire, Ian Whittaker, added: "The NWDA recognises the importance of the Blackpool Masterplan in revitalising the area and ensuring its future as an internationally acclaimed tourist resort for many generations to come.

"The completion of this innovative project signals that major, positive change has begun in Blackpool and I am delighted that the Agency is able to support the scheme, which will lift perceptions of the town as a visitor destination and investment location.
