I NOTICED the other day signs warning drivers of the presence of speed cameras in the area. Although it seems unnecessary to me that such warnings should be required I could not but wonder why they were placed at a height of about nine feet and on the inside of the pavement.

Is this so that a motorist, who if he is driving carefully, will not see them or does the average motorist spend all his time gazing up into the air and not looking at the road ahead? If it were necessary to warn motorists surely a large 30mph painted with a picture of a camera painted on the road surface would be better, after all that is where the driver is supposed to be looking.

Personally I don't see why any warning signs should be given as a driver who does not know what speed zone he is in should not be on the road.
