A MASSIVE drive to cut the number of accidents on the roads and in the home will take place next week.

The Lancashire Partnership for Road Safety (LPfRS) will hold a safety event on Tuesday September 7 on the car park of B & Q, Churchill Way, Nelson.

The event, between 11am and 7pm, will provide members of the public with an opportunity to meet partner agencies for a range of safety advice.

The Road Safety Project team will be promoting its child-friendly Bee Safe campaign to highlight the fact that seat belts save lives.

The partnership will pay particular attention to how grandparents can take responsibility for the safety of grandchildren left in their care.

Diane Griffiths, proprietor of Barrowford's mother and baby store Nursery Time, along with some of her staff, will also be available to undertake free, child car seat safety checks.

They will assess seat fitting and check that the seat is the right size for the child using it.

At the event, Lancashire Fire & Rescue Service will also be on hand to promote the use of smoke alarms, while Lancashire Constabulary's Crime Prevention Unit will advise on home security.

Representatives from the Action on Children's Accident Project (ACAP), Burnley, Pendle & Rossendale PCT, will focus their attention on home safety and offer advice on keeping children safe in the home.

Julie Carman, project co-ordinator, said: "Lots of children spend time at their grandparents' home either for regular childcare or social visits.

"There are many simple ways grandparents can ensure their home is safer for their grandchildren and if looking after them regularly, it may be worth buying some items of safety equipment.

"The ACAP team will be on hand on the day with lots of tips and advice on how to make the home safer for young visitors, however, it is important to always remember that nothing replaces supervision."
