A FARMER was prosecuted after a cow taken to Preston Auction Market for sale was found to have an ingrowing horn.

The troublesome horn had penetrated to a depth of half an inch a court was told.

The owner was fined £5 and ordered to pay £5 costs for causing unnecessary suffering.

The owner said he did not think it could have been suffering, because of the way it had been putting on weight.

A BARGAIN hunter at an Accrington jumble sale made off with a real buy when a young helper sold a handbag belonging to the sale organiser for 10p.

The brown leather shoulder bag contained car keys, house keys and the driving licence of Edna Dawson, the chair of the parents committee of Accrington West Scouts. Mrs Dawson waited for the buyer to return when they discovered the mistake, but nobody did.

A COURT ruling backed Reverend Steven Brian's decision to ban the use of pet names like dad and grandad on headstones in Holy Trinity Church cemetery in Freckleton.

Mr Brian ordered widow Olive Dixon to change her late husband's name from Tom to Thomas on the memorial.

But the stonemason who had done the work threatened a civil court action to keep the inscription as it was.
