THE North West Air Ambulance is launching a £500,000 appeal to replace its ageing helicopter.

Fundraising drive 'Operation Eagle' gets underway on Monday with the backing of Gulf War hero turned best-selling author John Nichol.

The Air Ambulance's present 30-year-old German Bolkow helicopter must be replaced by 2007 due to safety regulations.

It has helped save hundreds of lives since the charity was launched six years ago, carrying pateints to hospitals throughout the region.

Bosses want to replace it with a state-of-the-art EC 135 helicopter, which will be quicker, safer, more efficient and have more room and equipment for paramedics.

The charity is aiming to raise the £500,000 by mid-2005 as it will take two years to complete the purchase.

Air Ambulance Chief Executive Lynda Brislin said: "We're doing this because we have no option. We have to replace the old helicopter before it legally has to be withdrawn from service.

"The North West Air Ambulance belongs to everyone in the region, and we would urge every single person in the North West to support this new appeal.

"You never know when you might need the air ambulance."

Mr Nichol was shot down early in the first Gulf War. He was captured, tortured and paraded on television, provoking worldwide outrage and condemnation.

Mrs Brislin added: "John embodies everything the air ambulance and its paramedics stand for -- strength, courage, commitment and dedication.

"We are absolutely delighted that John is launching Operation Eagle."

Mr Nichol, who will be at the campaign launch at the Swallow Hotel, Samlesbury, said: "I am incredibly proud to be part of Operation Eagle. This self-funding charity forms a vital part of the North West's emergency services.

"With the help of local businesses and people it will continue to provide that vital service and save many more lives in the years to come."

The North West Air Ambulance covers 5,500 square miles and serves seven million people.

Around £65,000 is needed in fundraising each month just to keep it running. No government funding is provided.
