I AM saddened to read in the press that our local regiment is to have "Lancashire" omitted. My father (Fred Smith) was a member of the Accrington Pals, who was awarded the Military Medal for bravery under fire and mentioned in Dispatches.

He was an officers batsman and when the officer had his legs blown away my father carried him to safety under heavy gunfire. He has the "Gold Leaves" and also a signed document from Winston Churchill.

I have the medal in my possession but don't wish to part with it as my family is very proud of their grandfather's bravery.

HARRY SMITH, Rhodes Avenue, Pleckgate, Blackburn.
