TRANSPORT bosses have stepped in to save bus links between Bradley Fold, Radcliffe and Bury.

The intervention by Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority (GMPTA) comes after operator Blue Bus announced its intention to withdraw the 478 from Monday.

Now, from the same day, a new 511 service will replace part of the 478 route in Bradley Fold, as well as re-establishing shopping and medical links between Ainsworth and Radcliffe (Blackburn Street Health Centre) and Watling Street (Mile Lane Health Centre).

The new service will be operated by Blue Bus, with the financial support of the authority. It will run every hour, Monday to Saturday daytime, from Bury, via Bolton Road, Watling Street, Ainsworth and Bradley Fold to Radcliffe.

Councillor Roger Jones, authority chairman, said: "While it is always disappointing when operators choose to withdraw services, I am pleased that the authority has stepped in to save these important local transport links.

"I'm sure most people would agree that maintaining links to shopping and healthcare facilities is a worthy priority when it comes to financially supporting local bus services. I urge local people to make good use of the new 511 service and justify the money we are spending to support it."
