A SPORTS club aimed at keeping children occupied during the summer holidays has proved an unqualified success.

Young people have been flocking in droves to Westleigh Sports Club every Thursday and Friday for the past six weeks.

Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust's Sports Development Officer for Inclusion Danny Jones set up the club, based at Westleigh High School.

It targeted eight to 16-year-olds predominantly from the Trees Estate in Westleigh.

Mr Jones said: "The summer activities have been a great success with an average of 50 young people attending each day. It has been a great opportunity for young people to learn new skills, make new friends, and most importantly enjoy themselves."

A free summer camp was staged and the club has been funded through The Little Branches/Westleigh Community Board with Westleigh High School also contributing by providing free access to its sports hall and facilities.

Rachael Smith, 11, from Holly Grove in Leigh, said: "I have come to the club four times during the summer holidays and it has been really good. I have taken part in lots of different sports and really enjoyed them all. They've stopped me getting bored."
