ANGRY Tyldesley residents have sent a petition to Wigan Council asking for speed bumps and 'pinch points' to be removed.

The traffic calming measures on Astley Street and Princes Avenue have led to more accidents and damage to vehicles, according to the residents.

More than 1,000 people have signed the petition, and they have support from the ambulance service and the fire brigade.

Astley Street and Princes Avenue is the main route from Astley to Tyldesley. Atherton fire station manager Colin Waite says the speed bumps add "at least ten seconds" to the time it takes to get to an emergency call-out.

William Ward, of Kittiwake Close in Tyldesley, drives down Astley Street every day, and has had many problems with the bumps and 'pinch points'.

He said: "You take your life in your hands every time you go down there. The speed bumps are promoting bad driving, and they aren't doing their job. We need something to slow traffic all the way down the road."

The residents hope the speed bumps and 'pinch points' will be removed, as they were following a similar protest against bumps on Holden Road, Leigh.

Mr Ward suggested they should be replaced with a lower speed limit, speed cameras, roundabouts, and even bends in the road.

Highways chiefs could face further backlash from road users after speed bumps were installed on Windermere Road and Walmesley Road in Leigh.
