CLITHEROE Golf Club's South African-born member Archie Moro thrives on competitive golf and is a regular visitor to the winners enclosure.

But a level par 71 in the weekend medal proved to be three shots off the pace set by the in-form Geoff Sutcliffe who took first prize.

Archie had to settle for fourth place in Division One behind Eddie White and Malcolm Brown.

Ian Walsh took Division Two and a reduction in handicap with his 85-17-68 return, one shot ahead of the consistent David Coupe, while Dave Chippendale took third from Nathan Peel's dad John after a card play-off.

Andrew Mercer's handicap continues to improve and he confirmed his outstanding form by returning 42 points in the Junior Stableford event. Three shots behind was Tim Swarbrick to take second prize from James Kenyon who returned a steady 35 points.

LANCASHIRE came off worse in the War of the Roses at Lindrick on Saturday.

Making his return to the county side in the fixture where he won his 100th cap last year, Trevor Foster was beaten 3 and 2 by Yorkshire's Nick Walker and also lost his foursomes game with Daniel Belch.

Michael Hunt managed halves in both his games, while Jonathan Hurst won 4 and 3 in the foursomes with Robert Bardsley, but lost his singles game.

Yorkshire finished the match 11-7 winners.
