FA Cup: Colne 2 Peterlee Newtown 0

COLNE earned the right to play Chester-Le-Street-Town in the FA Cup on Saturday after beating Peterlee Newtown at the second attempt.

After a scrappy opening 25 minutes at Holt House, the visitors came closest to scoring when Ross Baxter tipped over a dipping drive.

The Reds slowly started to gain the upper hand with attempts from John Borland and a cross-shot from Gavin Cooper, which was well saved.

The breakthrough came on 39 minutes when a Cooper corner could only be palmed away by the keeper and the ball fell to Borland just outside the box to lob into an empty net.

Peterlee had several chances to equalise in the second half, while Cooper should have added to the lead with a clear header.

The second came on 68 minutes when Carl Haworth's solo run ended with him opening his account for the season.

The coach to Chester-Le Street on Saturday leaves the Thatch and Thistle at 9.30am. Supporters wishing to travel should contact secretary Dave Blacklock.
