BURNLEY goalkeeper Danny Coyne is hoping Mark Hughes will come to his international rescue this weekend.

While the rest of his club team-mates have enjoyed a welcome break following recent league exertions, Coyne has switched his attentions to Wales' upcoming World Cup qualifiers in Azerbaijan on Saturday and at home to Northern Ireland next Wednesday.

And the Clarets number one is keeping his fingers crossed he gets the nod from Welsh boss Hughes as four goalkeepers battle it out for the number one shirt for the nation's crucial double header.

"It's a good battle for the number one spot and you never know what is going to happen," said Coyne today, speaking exclusively from the Welsh HQ before flying out to Azerbaijan.

"There are four goalkeepers here and only two can be involved, so I'm hopeful. If you are a goalkeeper you don't want to be out of the team and I'm no different.

"But all my rivals are quality and, barring injury he is going to have us all to choose from."

Coyne's challengers for the goalkeeper's jersey are Paul Jones (Wolves), Mark Crossley (Fulham) and Darren Ward (Norwich).

However, of that trio, only Jones is a regular first choice, leaving him as favourite to start both games with Coyne, who started the two international games against Norway and Canada in May before being forced to sit out last month's friendly with Latvia through injury.

And the Prestatyn-born stopper, 31, is happy to be active again while the rest of the Clarets squad enjoy a relaxing week.

He added: "The rest of the Burnley lads have enjoyed a nice break this week, but to be honest I wouldn't have it any other way.

"There's no respite when you are involved in the international set-up, but it's an honour to represent your country and I feel privileged."

Coyne is doubly eager to get his chance, with Wales facing group favourites England in just over a month's time.

He added: "If we can just do things right, I think we have a really good chance of qualifying.

"England will obviously be the favourites, but looking at the other teams if we can get a good start we have a great chance.

"Home nations' games are open and they don't always go to plan, so we'll have no fear of facing England."

Meanwhile, Burnley's first team squad - minus Micah Hyde, who has again linked up with Jamiaca for Saturday's World Cup qualifier with Panama in Kingston - resumed training this morning after being given a few days off following Monday's home defeat to Gillingham.

Lee Roche missed last night's reserve team stalemate against Carlisle United with a niggle, but the problem is not expected to cause any major worries with the next first team game against Crewe still over a week away.

Burnley have confirmed they will entertain Wolves in the Carling Cup second round on Tuesday September 21 (7.45pm kick-off).

Tickets for the Turf Moor game are on sale now, priced at £15 for adults and £5 for concessions.

Season ticket holders have until close of business on Saturday, September 11 to claim their seats before all remaining seats go on general sale on Monday, September 13.
