YOUNGSTERS having to cross busy roads in four parts of East Lancashire are dicing with death because of a shortage of school crossing patrol staff.

Now local councils, which employ the fondly-known lollipop men and women, are appealing for people to fill vacancies in Blackburn, Darwen, Nelson and Bamber Bridge.

Ken Speak, manager for Lancashire School Crossing Patrol Service, said: "We desperately need to fill these vacancies, as the safety of the children could potentially be at risk."

Parents are responsible for ensuring their children get to and from school safely. But the crossing patrols are there to assist and guide children where appropriate.

Irene Reid, who crosses children from Longridge CE Primary School, has been doing the job for 35 years. She said: "I don't think there's a secret to being a good lollipop lady. As long as you get on with children and the general public, you're okay."
